Steve Jobs didn’t like Apple execs giving interviews. Up until recently Apple’s design chief, Jonathan Ive, has only appeared a handful of times in public for his works, much less give an in-depth interview. Please meet the designer that changed the world.
Ive and Jobs were two peas in a pod when it came to the design and high standards of Apple’s product. But unlike Jobs, Ive is a humble and low profile kinda guy. He views himself more of a maker than a designer.
Objects and their manufacture are inseparable. You understand a product if you understand how it’s made. I want to know what things are for, how they work, what they can or should be made of, before I even begin to think what they should look like,” Ive says.
For those who don’t know, Ive is the man behind the iconic designs of most of the products with an ‘i’ attached to it. His jellybean coloured iMac was but the start of his journey.
What people are responding to is much bigger than the object. They are responding to something rare — a group of people who do more than simply make something work, they make the very best products they possibly can. It’s a demonstration against thoughtlessness and carelessness,” Ive remarks about Apple products success.
