South by South West – one of the world’s most anticipated and exciting music/film/tech festivals – has been marred by the actions of an allegedly drunk person behind the wheel of a car.

According to CNN:

An intoxicated driver fleeing from the police plowed his car into a crowd at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, killing two people, authorities said.

The man and woman killed were riding their light motorcycles, said Art Acevedo, chief of the Austin Police Department.

At least 23 others were hospitalized, some with multiple internal injuries.

Colin Kerrigan, a freelance photographer attending the conference, was stunned by the sudden turn of events.

“One moment I’m photographing a magical show the next, I’m photographing a horrible and sad scene,” he tweeted.

The rampage started a bit earlier, says Buzzfeed:

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said in a press conference that the incident began after an APD officer started a DWI traffic stop outside the Shell Gas Station at the I-35 and 9th Street intersection.

The driver apparently weaved through the gas station, and then began driving against 9th Street, which is a one-way system.

Acevedo said the driver will be charged with two counts of capital murder.
