At least three people were killed when an explosion caused two buildings in New York’s East Harlem neighbourhood to collapse. The source of the explosion is still unknown, but one tenant claims there were complaints by residents of “unbearable” gas smells in recent weeks.
Firefighters and emergency personnel can be seen frantically putting out fires and searching for survivors in the debris. There are still nine residents unaccounted for. The explosion occurred at 09h30, 15 mins after a neighbouring resident reported smelling gas to authorities. The gas utility workers sent to look into the report, didn’t arrive in time to prevent the tragedy. The explosion shattered the windows of buildings a block away and send debris flying onto the railway track nearby.
