I see the topic of Luke Watson’s September 2006 Sports Illustrated quote coming up more and more. You know the one:

“Playing for the Boks would be a great honour. It has the potential and it has the ability to become one of the most powerful emblems this world has seen. It stands for equality. It stands for unity. It stands for a once-divided nation that now stands together. It stands for everything this world doesn’t have, and everything this world wants,” said Watson.

“Honour”
“Powerful”
“Equality”
“Unity”

Mainstream media out there are talking about how negative he has become about the Springbok emblem and how it represents nothing but the blood of our past.

Then this, the week of his hearing, came the following quote:

“In terms of my principles I won’t be able to play under the Springbok as national emblem. If there is a national emblem that represents everybody, I will play for South Africa with pride, honour and dignity,” Watson is quoted as saying in Die Burger.

Jeepers, that’s quite a “turn-around-jump-shot!”

I think this whole Sports Illustrated quote thing is going to gain a bit of momentum in the “press.”
