Film’s have often romanticized the lives of the famous ancient warriors. But the truth of the matter remains; they were slaves housed in fortress prisons. The gladiator school discovered outside of Vienna, Austria, is the first one discovered outside the city of Rome.
The gladiator school found at the Carnuntum site was entirely mapped using non-invasive earth-sensing technologies. Hidden beneath a pasture lies the remains of the fortress prison used to house and train the gladiators. The gladiators slept in three square metre cells. Each cell housed one or two prisoners. The fortress only had one gate exiting the compound, leading to the town’s amphitheater where the fights took place.
