Bad news for Muslims dreaming of going where no man has gone before. Islamic clerics have banned Muslims from living on Mars. But there is some logic behind this, considering you will most likely die from the red planet’s harsh environment.

Setting up home on Mars is equivalent to suicide, which is not permitted by the Muslim faith. A group called the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment has issued a fatwa against prospective Mars pioneers.

The group’s decree is in response to the Mars One project, which aims to establish a human settlement on Mars. The feasibility of the one-way trip to the red planet has come under fire from space experts, and now religious groups.

But the prospect of dying hasn’t deterred over 200,000 people from applying to be the first human settlers on Mars.
