Just when you think Giovanni’s can’t possibly stock anything else, they hit you with this vibe. Surely they are the only deli in SA selling the famous ‘black diamonds?’
As one of the most valuable food ingredients on the planet, it’s no surprise that these rare nuggets are selling at a reassuringly expensive R25 a gram. For your little habit, I’m sure 20g – 50g should be enough indulgence for the weekend.
We chatted to Nick from Giovanni’s who says it’s not just the general public who contribute to the demand, but local chefs as well. “We get them in every Thursday and they’re usually out by the end of the weekend – especially when local restaurants are including them in the more exotic dishes.”
Okay cool – sounds like we need to go there today or tomorrow morning to grab some!
And you are aware of the egg trick, right? Put that truffle in a tupperware with raw whole eggs (still in the shell) overnight in the fridge and crack those puppies in the morning. They will be infused with the glory that is black truffles and you will have an omelette fit for the gods!
Well done, Giovanni’s – we are officially impressed!
