Zambian Opposition Leader Calls Ruling President “A Potato”, Gets Arrested

Frank Bwalya, the head of the Alliance for a Better Zambia, attended a live radio interview in which he compared his president to a root vegetable.

He referred to president Michael Sata as “Chumbu Mushololwa” which, directly translated, refers to a sweet potato that breaks when it is bent and is used to describe someone who does not heed advice.

Zambian police have since arrested him, and charged him with defamation. If found guilty, he could face up to five years in the slammer.

Bwalya is a former Catholic priest, and he’s not the only one who’s pissed off the president recently. Last year, Nevers Sekwila Mumba of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy was questioned by police after he called the president “a liar.”
