It’s just what you’ve been waiting for! Or is it? Either way, DIY plastic surgery is a big thing now. Especially in Asia. In countries like Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, a lot of emphasis is placed on physical appearance. Physical traits like slim jawlines, straight noses and plump lips are highly sought after – especially for those seeking a leg up in the corporate world. South Korea ranked as the most plastic surgery dependent nation on earth in a recent study, with 16 procedures per 1,000 people. Taiwan took sixth, and Japan came in seventh. But plastic surgery is expensive. Which is why the new trend of DIY cosmetic surgery is really taking off, especially among teens. The tech consists of garishly coloured implements of torture that claim to hold your face in the ‘ideal’ position, in line with perceived beauty standards. A 17-year-old South Korean teen told the GlobalPost:
We want to become pretty without spending all the money. We know that these methods aren’t approved of, but lots of our peers do it.
Unsurprisingly, these contraptions don’t work. They just hurt your face. A Long Island doctor told a beauty blog in December that:
These kinds of devices usually make claims that have no basis in studies or scientific fact. At the very best, you end up completely wasting your money. At the very worst, you can injure yourself resulting in infections, permanent scars, or other irreversible facial deformities.
Don’t do it kids.
