Super-yachts have become the mainstay for billionaires across the globe, making an already exclusive club even more nichey. A report from Wealth-X and the UBS Global Billionaire Census (really, that’s a thing?) has found that the average billionaire spends $22 million on yachts, which equates to around a measly R226 million.
In that spirit, check out the top five most expensive super-yachts, and feel bad about yourself.
David Geffen, music mogul and cofounder of Dreamworks SKG purchased this bad boy from Russian Business tycoon Roman Abramovich. In true showoff style the Pelorus has not one,but two helicopter pads, two swimming pools and a collection of smaller boats on the tender deck.
The Dubai, which currently belongs to Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was(shame) the most expensive yacht in the world back in 2006. It’s still pretty impressive though. At 524 feet,it’s the third-largest private yacht in the world, boasting seven decks, a squash room, helicopter pad, and even a small submarine.
This too cool for school-single lettered super-yacht was designed by Philippe Starck, who ironically preaches democratic design (that is “objects that are not just reserved for the elite”). Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko owns this beast, and among its luxurious amenities are bath faucets worth $40,000 (R411,720), staircase banisters worth $60,000 (R617,580), and a bed that rotates with the touch of a button, allowing for perfect views of the sunrise and sunset.
Russian (see a trend here?) vodka distributor Yuri Scheffler owns this 440-foot yacht, which has turquoise neon lights that glow at night. With a total of 48,000 square feet across seven decks, including indoor and outdoor pools, 12 staterooms, and an outdoor screening room, the creators of this yacht cared less about faucets, and just ended up making a mean looking luxury yacht.
Russian Business Tycoon Roman Abramovich (suffereing from super-yacht envy) purchased the 536-foot-long Eclipse in 2010, when it still held the title for world’s largest yacht. The Eclipse boasts two helipads, a disco, cinema, hair salon, and a restaurant. Plus it’s rumored to have a laser defense system against paparazzi trying to photograph high-profile guests.
So, what sets the Azzam apart from the other super-yachts?
Well, the Azzam is not only the most expensive yacht, it is also the largest at a tremendous 590 feet long, which is even longer than some commercial cruise ships. Appropriately this yacht is owned by by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates. It took German shipbuilders, Lürssen Yachts four years to build this humble guy, which is rumoured to have up to 50 private suites. If that’s not enough to make you cry, according to Wealth-X, the $627 million purchase was only about 3,5% of Sheikh Khalif’s net worth of $17,9 billion. Do you really want us to convert that to rands for you?
