I have absolutely never noticed that every plaster I’ve ever put on my body has either had Mickey Mouse’s face on it, or was the colour of my skin. It probably has something to do with the fact that I’m white, and it’s normal that everyday “flesh coloured” products suit my skin. Why that is, is a whole other debate, and actually a fairly deep issue worth exploring in conversation. For now, what you need to know is that “flesh coloured” plasters only suit pretty pale flesh. Seriously, go open up a box of plasters with a black person on the box cover, and take a look at the colour of those puppies – they’re whiter than croquet.
Okay, fine. So plasters aren’t made for people with darker skin tones. You can wear transparent ones, right?
No one likes to use transparent plasters, for two good reasons:
1) You can see the white square, and
2) You gore seeps through that white (and inevitably red) square.
So it’s especially cool that a Cape Town entrepreneur, Lize Hartley founded Plasta – a company dedicated to providing first aid plasters, waterproof plasters, assorted boxes, sports tape, and micro pore in a range of skin tones.
Here’s the first iteration of their product:
Slow clap, people.
They produced 10,000 boxes of their flagship product, got it on the shelves of Spars and independent pharmacies, and into the hands of any of their friends who would stand still long enough to be slapped with a Plasta.
They’re currently raising second-round funding to extend their range from one product, to 22, which means that you could actually own part of this company if you like the idea enough.
