It’s been one helluva hectic year. There was typhoon Haiyan, the war in Syria, the Boston bombings, wild Australian bushfires and worldwide protests.
And as always, photographers around the world have pushed themselves to the limit, going beyond their boundaries to bring back the images that the world needs to see.
TIME has once again compiled the top 10 photos of what has been a tumultuous year. This is as much a celebration of photography, as it is a reminder of the current human condition.
