There are some serious concerns that Brazil’s world cup stadia will simply not be completed in time for the football festivities in June next year. And now, progress has been slowed significantly after a crane crashed on top of a stadium in Sao Paolo yesterday, killing two people.
The Itaquerao Stadium in Sao Paulo was nearing completion when the deadly accident happened, but the damage severely hampered the progress of the 70,000-seat stadium, which is set to host the opening game.
The ground below the crane became unstable for some reason, causing the massive vehicle to collapse. It may well be linked to the heavy downpours that Sao Paulo had been enduring before Wednesday’s accident.
The crane was lifting a portion of the elaborate roof when it fell. Workers told the local press that:
I saw the piece of the crane was lifting, balance in the air, suddenly it started to shake and fell on to the stadium. I heard a very loud boom, as if an entire building was falling.
And if the story couldn’t get any worse, construction worker Ronaldo Oliveira dos Santos, 44, was killed while inside a porta-loo. The other victim, Fabio Luiz Pereira, 42, a driver working working for a subcontractor, was killed as he slept in his car by the construction site.
A huge LED panel outside the stadium was also hit by the crane collapse.
