Many of us haven’t even begun dreaming about one day going on a luxury train journey. But in the interests of being prepared, we’d like to offer you a list of some of the world’s best – just in case you feel the need to drop some serious dollar when you next go on holiday.
Of course, any list of luxury train journey’s has to start local, with the Rovos Rail.
Rovos Rail, South Africa
Basically, it’s the pimping-est train in the world. With seven different trips on offer, the 72-person train is not short of destinations. The Royal Suites (pictured) take up half of a whole train carriage – more than enough space to light up a cuban cigar while spraying French champagne all over the place.
Venice-Simplon Orient Express, Europe
If you’re going to go to Venice from London, you might as well go via Paris on Europe’s most cushty train journey. For the price of admission you get two inter-connecting rooms and mosaic-tiled bathrooms. Also on board is a baby grand piano – just for fun.
The Ghan, Australia
G’day! This is one of the longest luxury train rides in the world, stretching across the spine of Australia. The route runs an impressive 979km in 54 very comfortable hours. The Platinum category (pictured) have double beds, lounge chairs and en-suite lavatories, washbasins and showers.
The Eastern & Oriental, South-East Asia
Can anyone say ‘complimentary mini-bar’? Oh yeah. This baby cruises from Bangkok to Shanghai, and with carriages painted in emerald green and ivory, it’s inspired by the 1932 film ‘Shanghai Express’ starring Marlene Dietrich. The Presidential cabins (pictured) are 11.6 square metres in size and come with two moveable chairs.
