John Paul DeJoria was a hobo – but he always had good taste. Even in his homeless days, he slept in an old Rolls Royce along LA’s Sunset Strip. But he had plans – he and cofounder of his business, Paul Mitchell got together about $700 and hit the pavements, going door-to-door in an attempt to make some sort of profit. Years later, DeJoria and Mitchell are in more comfortable conditions, having started the stupendously successful Paul Mitchell Systems.
DeJoria was no one-hit wonder though, going on to cofound Patron spirits – and thereby pretty much invent the luxury tequila market. These two brands alone, Paul Mitchell and Patron, have made DeJoria one of the wealthiest people in America with $4 billion in the bank.
