So a few weeks ago, newly appointed Cricket South Africa CEO Haroon Lorgat released the 2014 match itinerary for the Proteas – which miffed the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The BCCI has always had an edgy relationship with Lorgat, especially during his stint as the ICC CEO due to their differences over a number of issues.
So angered were the BCCI by Lorgat, that they pushed to have Lorgat suspended from the ICC Chief Executives Committee.
Zapiro, in typical fashion, took to his drawing board and produced something that Hindus aren’t particularly happy with. The cartoon depicts Lord Ganesha (the Hindu god of success) holding a cricket bat and money, while Cricket SA chief executive Haroon Lorgat, tied up on an altar, is about to be sacrificed by CSA officials.
The South African Hindu Dharma Sabha was expected to lay a formal complaint on Monday with the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities.
Ram Maharaj, Dharma Sabha president, said he recieved hundreds of calls from concerned Hindus who said they wanted Zapiro to “do the right thing” – and that they were willing to accept an apology.
Whether or not an apology is going to arrive is uncertain. We all know Zapiro doesn’t hand out apologies easily.
