It’s Christmas time again for the Apple family. And despite the fact that Apple’s launch events are now missing the engaging marketing savvy that only Steve Jobs could bring, Steve Cook gave an impressive performance at Apple’s annual iPad Fall Event – where he casually unveiled a whole host of new Apple products and software. Obviously, the headliner of the show was the new iPad Air – Cook managed to cover a whole lot more in a presentation that lasted over an hour.

1. New iPad Air to Hit Shelves

In line with Apple’s other “Air” products, the iPad Air is basically is a much thinner, lighter iPad mini. And by “much thinner” we mean “paper-thin”. Though the iPad Air is actually a tad bigger than the original mini, it has a leaner profile – and fits into one hand a lot more snugly than the mini did.

2. New iPad mini with Retina display

The biggest improvement here is obviously the Retina display, with the new iPad mini displaying four times the pixels on a jam-packed 2048 x 1536 resolution, which makes text a lot sharper and easier to read. Also, some have said that iOS7 looks a bit silly on the lower resolution of the original iPad mini – but this new one hits the ball out of the park with the Retina display bringing out the best of iOS7 .

3. There’s a new Mac Pro – in the shape of a cylinder

Apple’s new desktop computer will come in the form of a thick, black cylinder no taller than a 330ml Coke bottle. While iPods, iPhones and iPads are replaced fairly often, this is a change that has been almost 10 years in the making. 

4. The New OS X 10.9 “Mavericks”

Cape Town residents will find it hard to shake off the resemblance between the name of the new OS X and the name of a strip club in Town,but none the less, the new operating system goes live as a free download in the Mac App Store today. With it comes the usual promises of faster,more efficient processing power -but significant improvements have been made over the OS X Mountain Lion, with a more “robust” notification centre and better support for multiple monitors and full-screen apps.
