We were hanging out at Cape Town Tourism’s cool #LoveCapeTown National Heritage house at the end of last month, when we spied this delightful piece of machinery.
Quite mean. I mean, who doesn’t like a lovely looking fridge? People with dead hearts, that’s who.
Anyway, upon closer inspection we saw something else.
You see that?
That’s right, my friend. A new can. A redesigned can. A, if you’ll allow me the liberty, luxury can.
Now, I’ve heard that Grolsch came in cans, but I’ve always been a bottle-trumps-all kind of man, especially when it came to Grolsch’s iconic swing-top, which has been pleasuring people with taste buds since 1897. Until I saw – nay, felt – this little puppy. It’s tall and substantial at 500ml, but delightfully soft for a beverage can.
From a pure design point of view it’s a thing of beauty.
The combined weight of the beer and the softness of the walls of the can creates a nesting of sorts in the palm of your hand. It’s a small pleasure, but a rich life is one in which the smaller delights are savoured.
So I did some digging. It turns out that the Grolsch can is available (only in South Africa) in a four-pack, which if we’re honest with ourselves is the perfect quantity for personal refreshment at an outdoor function (known as a “braai”). What’s more, that deliciously soft exterior is made from 99,9% recyclable materials.
