The Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s acting executive director, Koekie Mbeki, said her directorate was investigating 168 cases in which SAPS cops were accused of rape. She went on to say that the figure was “substantially higher” than the 40 rape cases reported in the preceding financial year – you don’t say.
The Western Cape (37) and Gauteng (27) provinces have the highest number of cases involving cops – the people who are supposed to be “protecting” us – raping people in custody.
Other shocking stats in the police watchdog’s latest annual report include a 37% increase in crimes by police, 42 deaths in domestic violence incidents involving police officers, 32 people killed by officers allegedly driving negligently and 50 reported cases of police torture this financial year. Crimes reportedly committed by police officers range from assault, to unlawfully discharging of firearms, to attempted murder.
Mbeki said her directorate has secured 57 criminal convictions…so far.
