City Of Johannesburg Lays Criminal Charges Against Whistleblower

Last week, vulnerabilities in the city of Joburg’s online ratepayers portal were widely reported. At the time, anyone with internet access could view municipal invoices which included personal details, financial details, PIN numbers and addresses of Joburg residents.

The City of Joburg would like residents to rest peacefully,  because the “hacker” who uncovered the vulnerabilities has been apprehended, and charges have been laid.

The city notes that after an investigation with their IT partner, they filed a criminal case with the  Hillbrow police station.

Police spokesperson Gabu Tugwana said:

Criminal acts of this nature will not go unpunished and the city intends to send out a strong message that a deliberate and malicious breach of this nature will not be tolerated

The identity of the “hacker” remains a mystery, but Tugwana added it was not a member of city staff.
