Want to see an astonishing disappearing act? This video shows 25 trees saying goodbye to the light of day, as they get sucked into a massive sinkhole in Louisiana.

The sinkhole showed its first bubbles last June, and in August gobbled up about 24 acres of land. It’s latest victims were these 25 unsuspecting trees.

What is a sinkhole you ask? It forms when acidic water dissolves limestone below the ground, until it forms a deep dark cave. The acid continues munching away at the rock until  the land collapses the cave roof.

The state of Louisiana and Assumption Parish’s Police are blaming Texas Brine Co. for the sinkhole and are planning to sue the salt-mining company, saying the sinkhole is the result of a structural failure of Texas Brine’s salt cavern there.

According to documents, Texas Brine has been paying $875 (R8,980) each week to residents (about 350 of them) who have evacuated the area. They are also trying to organize buyouts for residents who are waiting, in sinkhole territory, hoping that the ground will stabilize.
