Facebook billionaire Sean Parker spent a hefty sum to give himself and his wife the wedding of their dreams on Saturday. But R24,543,750 is not what they owe in decor bills.
When you chose a location that is in the midst of ecologically sensitive area to build castles and fantasy cottages, you have to be prepared for the consequences – even if you’re Sean Parker.
He had no consideration for the ancient redwoods or endangered steelhead trout of the Big Sur’s Ventana Inn campground, nor was he phased about the area’s regulations. The California Coastal Commission reported on Monday that all the features that were built into and onto the sensitive land, from fake ruins, waterfalls, staircases and a huge dancefloor, and not to mention the porter-loos, were without any permits.
This is how the CCC described the changes:
The Parker Respondents proceeded to perform unauthorized development activities within the campground. Existing roads and campsites were graded and contoured to create the appearance of ruins. Stone gateways and walls were constructed. Staircases were crafted around existing habitat and redwood trees. An artificial pond was dug and installed. A stone bridge over the pond was constructed. Several elevated platforms were created, some adjacent to Post Creek (Exhibit 9). Over 100 potted trees and plants were partially planted within the existing road beds and campsites, and lighting was installed in the redwood forest. In addition to the unpermitted development, other items to facilitate the event have also been placed on the site including tents and generators.
Parker did however pay the sum for the damages that were done and said in a statement that he and his wife “always dreamed of getting married in Big Sur, one of the most magical places on Earth.”
