In this week’s M&G Newsroom, Verashni Pillay and Deshnee Subramany, M&G online editors, ran through the weekend papers news headlines including those on the front page of the Mail & Guardian.
The M&G’s health editor Mia Malan takes us into the curious case of a small Eastern Cape village that saw their violent crimes wiped out after the consumption of alcohol was more carefully controlled. Can their example be replicated across the country?
Alcoholism in the Eastern Cape has been dramatically reduced since a decision was made by the Chiefs of the village to close shebeens at 19h00. This rule was implemeted in an attempt to curb the violent crimes that were related to alcohol abuse. The decision made by the Chiefs of the village have been proven to be effective by research conducted by the World Health Organisation. Since the implementation in February 2012 there hasnt been a single alcohol related crime or act.
