Adam and Heather Barrington, a couple from North Carolina, travelled to Hawaii to get assistance with the birth of their child. But this is not the medical assistance that most of us are used to hearing about. The couple crossed seas to bring their new born into the world in a…dolphin assisted birth.
Heather told the Charlotte Observer:
It is about reconnecting as humans with the dolphins so we can coexist in this world together and learn from one another, Having that connection with the pod of dolphins anytime – even if the birth doesn’t happen in the water – still brings peace, comfort and strength to the mother and baby during labor.
In order to prepare for this obscure birthing, Adam and Heather had to take prenatal classes and swims with the underwater creatures prior to labour.
The Sirius Institute in Pohoa who run the programme said on their website:
we are dedicated to the creation of human/dolphin co-creative habitats where dolphins and people can learn from each other through music, underwater birth, dolphin sound healing and restoration.
There are some reports from websites like Medical Daily that believe dolphin assisted birth is not safe or a reasonable form of therapy as a result of the mammals agression, but this does not seem to bother the couple at all.
Heather:
Dolphins are very intelligent and healing which in turn calms mother and baby for the whole process,
