Game changing stuff this.
Instead of tablets and treatments, scientists at Reading University have said that our favourite celebratory drink, champagne, can help brain disorders, the only catch is YOU HAVE TO HAVE REGULAR DOSES OF IT… oh no!
Apparently an intake of three glasses of bubbly a week can result in the fight against unnerving disorders like Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
Jeremey Spencer a biochemistry professor and led his team to the following outcome: They have reported that there is a compound in champagne called phenolic acid, found in black grapes, and is what can rejuvenate memories. Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are both crucial ingredients in any champagne mixture.
Spencer:
Dementia probably starts in the 40s and goes on to the 80s. It is a gradual decline and so the earlier people take these beneficial compounds in champagne, the better.
Cool stuff research team, but how did you get to these results?
Spencer told the Mail on Sunday about their research process. Apparently the team put champagne in, wait for it..rats food, every day for six weeks. The rats were then made to run through a maze to find a treat of sorts and then the process was repeated to see how much of the maze the rats remembered.
Now for the good stuff.
The rats that had no champagne had a 50 % success rate in the maze, and the ones who had been enjoying their champers in their food had a 70% pass rate.
The results were dramatic. After rats consumed champagne regularly, there was a 200 per cent increase of proteins important for determining effective memory.
This occurred in rats after just six weeks. We think it would take about three years in humans.
This research is exciting because it illustrates for the first time that moderate consumption of champagne has the potential to influence cognitive functioning such as memory.
Of course with these positive results Spencer and his team attained when testing rodents, they will be destined for greater things, like testing the process on humans. Spencer hopes to trial around 60 pensioners over a three year period to further the studies.
Although the studies are groundbreaking and something that could change the way our brain “ages” if you will, it’s still in the early phases, so one must not start popping corks just yet.
Alzheimer’s Society told the newspaper:
This is an interesting study, especially for those who enjoy a glass of bubbly. However, people should not start celebrating just yet. This is the first time a link between champagne and dementia risk reduction has been found. A lot more research is needed.
Brought to you by Pierre Jourdan, the only champagne you wouldn’t mind drinking for three years 😉
