The Maslow Hotel in Sandton saw an influx of wealth yesterday when it played host to an exclusive property auction, including warehouses, residential estates, and a beautiful Greek island, named Sophia.
It is reported that the auction didn’t have as much fire as auctioneer Hedley “The Hammer” Harris would have liked. Interest in the items was low, wallets were tight, and bidding wars were few and far between.
As the auction began to wind to a close, Harris introduced the Greek island.
We’re going onto the big one. The is the first time in South Africa we’re actually auctioning off an island. You have an opportunity to make history because all South Africans will know you put your hand up and made history.
Harris opened the bidding off at R35 million, but the audience barely stirred, forcing Harris to lower the price below the R10 million mark.
For all intents and purposes, the island looked like it was going to stay on the table. That was, of course, until Harris announced that an unidentified man or woman had put through a winning bid of R34 million, over the phone.
Do you know who that man or woman is? Let us know.
