It isn’t a day in the sun with the addition of some douchebaggery.
East Beach in Port Alfred was the home to a little ruckus on Sunday afternoon after a beefy jet ski rider attacked surfer, Mike Varela.
Eyewitness and local surfer, David MacGregor, contacted surf magazine, ZigZag to report the incident.
The altercation started when surfers asked Joburg businessman and jet skier, Rudi van der Westhuisen to move further down the beach, as his presence was endagering the bathers and surfers.
The Daily Dispatch and several other beach goers saw the burly jet skier punch one surfer in the chest before attacking another when he too complained about alleged public drinking and reckless driving in the surf zone.
This “tiff” led to Varela being “hit in the face, headbutted and wrestled to the ground in a headlock” before fellow surfers could get involved to stop Van der Westhuisen. Varela was left with a bloodied mouth.
But wait, there is more. MacGregor states that a man claiming to be Van der Westhuisen’s father threatened to tazer the surfers in an effort to break up the fight.
Apparently the rivalry between the surfers and van der Westhuisen at this particular beach has been going on for a while. John Burman who was an eyewitness said that van der Westhuisen “said the fight broke out when he got tired of the ‘yap, yap’ of the complaining surfers. He however denied drinking alcohol or attacking anyone – claiming he was defending himself instead.”
Rudi van der Westhuisen, said:
All these guys are talking kak, I have jet skied at East Beach for 22 years and was not breaking any laws.
Locals at the beach remain worried about the safety for their kids and loved ones when there are maniacs not taking other people in the sea.
Behaviour of this kind is a real danger and threat to the safe use of the beach for everyone.” He said the jet skier could easily have moved down the beach.
The fight comes weeks after a tourist to Cape Town was brutally assaulted while surfing in Cape Town by a notorious local.
