News broke last month of an assault at a Bloemfontein petrol station convenience store in the early hours of March 2 on brothers Eben and Neil Sonnekus by off-duty policeman, Christoffel Neuhoff.
Footage released of the assault shows a man alleged to be Neuhoff striking Neil Sonnekus from behind, knocking him out cold. He then attacks Eben Sonnekus repeatedly, before leaving with a male and female acquaintance.
While the assault has been widely reported in Free State media, we can exclusively reveal that Neil Sonnekus is the owner of Cherry Online, the Bloemfontein-based design company which was embroiled in controversy in February for winning a R90 million tender to design the Free State Government website.
The website that was produced was based on a $40 WordPress template, and was replicated in less than two hours at a cost of R350 by a web designer, as reported by eNCA.
The motive for Neuhoff’s alleged assault is unknown, but an anonymous tipster to 2oceansvibe suggests that Neuhoff was provoked by Eben and Neil Sonnekus, and that the video above is an edited and abridged version of events as they truly happened.
Neuhoff appeared briefly in court on two charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Neuhoff was granted bail of R500.
The assault case against Neuhoff has been postponed until 13 May.
