The Steubenville rape case has captured the national agenda of the United States. Two high school students stand accused of raping a 16 year-old girl after she passed out at a party.
Disgusted by a widespread sentiment in the US that the victim could have somehow avoided her fate, university student Samantha Stendal decided to take a stand by making a YouTube Public service announcement.
Photo: Ma’lik Richmond, one of the accused hugs his mother Daphne Birden after closing arguments in the trial for Ma’lik and Trent Mays on rape charges on Saturday, March 16, 2013, in Steubenville, Ohio.
The video has racked up over 1,3 million views in three days.
Stendal says she is stunned by the response to her video:
The message I hope that people can get from this video is that we need to treat one another with respect, No matter what gender, we should be listening to each other and making sure there is consent.
