Last week’s Kagiso’s Island of Treasure was all about Kagiso Lediga dipping his toes into the Jamaican dance scene and in this week’s episode he dives headfirst into their musical culture. Tessanne Chin is a popular Jamaican singer who has sang alongside the likes of Celine Dion – which means about as much to Kagiso as it does to us – which is not too much.
While we get that it’s a pretty big deal for the singer herself, we can’t help but snort at Kagiso fumbling through trying to remember who Celine Dion actually is, trying out a few different lyrics on Tessanne to test the singer’s patience. To her credit, Miss Chin gets the joke and continues to laugh everything Kagiso says off.
She even turns the mic over to him while performing one of her songs and lets him mix in a few lyrics here or there. As always, Kagiso isn’t there to take anything seriously, and I’m not sure I could’ve taken him all that seriously while he’s still dressed in his dancing gear from last episode.
This episode is another one that deviates from what I thought the format for this show was going to be, steering away from Rosina and Kagiso checking out Jamaican tourist spots and actually getting in touch with the culture directly. As far as high points go, Kagiso’s on form as always and Tessanne is one talented lady. I will say that I didn’t expect them to actually perform the entire song through this episode but they did.
Next week brings promise of some local cuisine and then we’re only one away from that Yohan Blake interview I’ve been so amped on seeing.
We’ll bring you a new episode of Kagiso’s Island of Treasure every week for the next 10 weeks in the lead-up to the launch of the Tropika Island of Treasure 5 on SABC 1. You can also check them out on Youtube over at Tropika’s channel.
