We have already had a look at some of the really cool things that have come out of 2013’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but here is a more comprehensive list of some of the coolest things.
Toyota’s Lexus is causing quite a stir this year, and all round, people seem quite excited about it. It’s not going to be long before these self-driving vehicles become commonplace on the roads. Though don’t expect that in South Africa for quite some time.
The HAPIfork is like a pedometer, but for your mouth. Using sensors, it monitors how many times per meal and per minute that you lift the fork to your mouth. It will also time the interval between each mouthful like an attentive mouth monitoring butler should. The theory is that if you eat slower, you’ll feel fuller, and thereby lose weight.
Panasonic unveiled the Viera TV. It is essentially a smart TV that has what you’d expect from a modern smart TV these days: face recognition technology that will recognise you, and thus treat you well by launching your very own custom home screen when you turn it on. Here you’ll be able to access all your favourite apps and treat it pretty much like a large computer screen if you wanted. It will also behave like a normal TV.
Trakdot: now this is handy, especially if you travel through OR Tambo International for any reason. GlobaTrac’s Trakdot luggage tracking system is the answer to the very likely scenario that your luggage goes missing when travelling. It’s a palm-sized cellular-based tracking device that you pair with your cell phone or smartphone. Once packed in your luggage, you can track its whereabouts via the app, website or via SMS’s and email.
The Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses are competiton to Google’s augmented reality glasses. Run on Android, the glasses feature what you’d expect: navigation via a computer interface, the ability to make calls and watch videos.
On the list of other things that was bound to start going mainstream comes Vehicle Diagnostics by Delphi. Currently only to be released for the Verizon network in the States, this product will allow vehicle owners, who fit the little black box (about the size of a deck of cards) to their vehicle’s computer system to track their vehicle’s whereabouts, run diagnostic tests and even open the boot. One does this via an app on ones smartphone, of course.
Lenovo announced a new 27-inch tablet computer to be released this summer called the “IdeaCentre Horizon Tablet PC,” or Horizon for short. It’s been designed for family use, and will allow up to four users to work off it at once. Running on Windows 8, it comes with joysticks and air-hockey paddles. Expect a tablet that turns into a rather large gaming device.
Samsung’s new NX300 Wi-Fi cameras do what might soon become normalalised across all cameras that behave mostly like a camera: full integration with things like Facebook and Instagram. Its Android and iOS operating system features will also allow you to transfer directly to your computer, phone and friends’ devices. Standard.
Sculpteo 3D printing – which won 2013’s CES Design and Engineering Best of Innovations award – is a tool that will allow you to create your own free 3D design for your iPhone cover. Using the iOS app (soon to be available on Android), you will design, print and order your cover from them.
Flower Power by Parrot is for you, the average herbiculturalist or gardener that can’t always find the time to talk to his or her plants or vegetables. Flower Power, an iPhone app, will test your plants’ conditions against an ideal environment for that type, and give you advice accordingly.
