Another week and, yes, that means a brand new episode of Tropika’s Kagiso’s Island of Treasure web series. The first three episodes have deftly covered the setup for this 10-episode show, involving comedian Kagiso Lediga’s trip to Jamaica to prove he can host the Tropika Island of Treasure 5 TV show and do a better job of it than DJ Fresh.
Personally I was hoping we’d get past this setup stuff and get to the real meat soon. They flew the guy all the way to Jamaica after all, so they may as well get right to it. Last week’s episode ended promisingly enough with Kagiso recruiting hottie ex-Miss Jamaica Rosina Casserly into his little banana republic camera crew and so I was waiting to see what spice she brings to the show.
Just as I’d hoped, Rosina gives Kagiso someone to play his new arrogant diva persona off of. In Episode 3, the crew take a trip down to a Jamaican flea market so Kags can get himself some authentic gear for his stay. As it turns out he’s also learned a little local slang – sort of. Rosina provides a perfect foil for him, joining him to co-host his little show but also questioning him at every turn. I think one of my favourite bits in this episode, in fact, was the way he handles her questions at that first stall vendor. Check it out.
This is the first of the episodes to not end on a cliffhanger but the “To Be Continued” bit at the end promises us a little taste of the Jamaican music scene next week. Let’s see how this guy handles his reggae for now, but I’m still counting down the days to that Yohan Blake interview in Episode 7.
We’ll bring you a new episode of Kagiso’s Island of Treasure every week for the next 10 weeks in the lead-up to the launch of the Tropika Island of Treasure 5 on SABC 1. You can also check them out on Youtube over at Tropika’s channel.
