So last week we pointed you in the direction of a rad new web series produced by the guys at Tropika as part of the lead-up to the Tropika Island of Treasure 5 show they air every year on SABC1. This is Kagiso’s Island of Treasure and, despite a few questionable directorial decisions here or there, the first episode had us in stitches.
Last week’s episode ended with the threat by local comedian Kagiso Lediga to actually fly over to Jamaica, getting there before the cast and crew of Tropika’s show and show them he can do a better job than any of them – especially Island of Treasure host DJ Fresh. In this week’s episode he makes good on his promise by actually flying to Jamaica to track down Fresh’s co-host ex-Miss Jamaica Rosina Casserly (who, I’ll say, has a fine, fine future in entertainment TV). But first Kagiso has to put together a crew to help him film his show.
He does this by recruiting them with a little help from a towel and some not-so-stealthy ninja sneaking. It’s a little cartoony but the gag works even when it goes on maybe one time too many. In episode 1 we got a taste of Kagiso playing a bit aggressive and cocky, which is something we aren’t used to from him, but it looks like they’ll be playing that angle up for a few episodes and he’s certainly a lot better at it already by episode 2. Hopefully he can keep this persona up for the whole series because it works for him.
However, we’re also hoping Miss Casserly gets to stick around for a few episodes because the crew’s blank expressions may have been hilarious in this episode, but they may grow a little boring without someone for Kagiso to bounce his arrogance off of.
We’ll bring you a new episode of Kagiso’s Island of Treasure every week for the next 10 weeks in the lead-up to the launch of the Tropika Island of Treasure 5 on SABC 1. You can also check them out on Youtube over at Tropika’s channel.
