At the beginning of this month, we sent the Bearded Wiseman off on an expedition to Jozi. It was no ordinary mission – he had to compete in an Amazing Race-like challenge in a TukTuk around the Sandton CBD.
He did alright, and placed fifth out of 10 competitors that also included 2oceansVibe Radio’s Bailey Schneider. Considering this was unfamiliar territory for him, this is okay.
Bailey beat the Bearded Wiseman too.
Says the Bearded Wiseman of the event:
What made the event unique was the fact that we had to get our Twitter followers to help us out by answering the 10 clues that we received in chronological order. Basically, we couldn’t do anything without their help. This meant finding everything from using GPS coordinates to get to locations, to finding guys in public spaces that we had to present ourselves to.
It was so rad. What a great experience. I wasn’t happy to be defeated by Mike Sharman and Bailey, but that’s life. They know that CBD. They knew short cuts.
But seriously, this is a great way to get around the Sandton CBD. Cars in Jozi are aggressive, however, there is nothing aggressive about missioning around Sandton in an Old Mutual TukTuk.
The race, hailed as the Old Mutual #SheShaTuks Challenge, was initiated in order to raise awareness for 25 new Old Mutual-branded TukTuk’s that have been launched in Sandton, and these TukTuk’s are part of a project to help create awareness for some amazing initiatives that Old Mutual proudly supports: The Bulungula Incubator Project, Nqabayensimbi Poultry Farmers, Reikemetse Agricultural Project, The Heiveld Tea Co-operative and the Wildlands Conservation Trust. Read more about each of these inspirational initiatives on the Do Great Things Website.
The Bearded Wiseman says that using the TukTuk’s is “highly recommended”. They operate in a 3km and 5km radius around the CBD, and cost R25 and R35 for the service respectively. Find out more or book a TukTuk on the Shesha Tuks website.
