Tonight is Guy Fawkes night and the City of Cape Town has urged Capetonians to be cautious and sensible when participating in annual organised fireworks displays or discharging shop-bought fireworks.
There are eight designated areas for people to go and discharge their fireworks if they are not attending some kind of organised display. The eight sites will be monitored by authorities and Mayor Paticia de Lille said she had asked metro police to act against those not obeying the rules.
I make an appeal to Capetonians that if they see anyone disturbing the peace by lighting fireworks in a non-designated area, they should call metro police who have been instructed to take action.
The designated areas are as follows:
It is illegal for members of the public to discharge fireworks outside of these areas and there will be a zero-tolerance approach to those who don’t obey the authorities.
