Over the past two months, artist Michael Elion created this rainbow display outside the Commune.1 gallery in Cape Town – without using any computer or special effects! It featured as part of the build-up to the recent Creative Week Cape Town, and was also part of a group exhibition celebrating the Commune.1’s first anniversary.

The rainbow consists of water vapour and sunlight. The effect was generated using a high pressure pump powered by a petrol motor. As water exits the tank it is atomised by a special nozzle to make it the exact size needed to generate the rainbow effect.

Elion’s talent has already seen him create exhibits for the opening ceremony of 2010 World Cup and for major art events in Paris, Berlin, and Rome. According to the artist, creating pieces that inspire people is what his work is all about.

My urban artworks engage with the built environment and aim to enrich our experience of city life.The rainbow activates an ordinary street and turns it into a moment of wonder. It reminds people about the beauty in the world around us and how fortunate we are to be alive to experience it. People really loved it. On the day the photos were taken people were dancing in the street and jumping around like children.
