Transport Strike Update: More Vehicles Torched, Petrol Pumps Start Running Dry

Members of the transport industry are marching in the Johannesburg CBD today to protest their current salaries. Negotiations between the Road Freight Employers’ Association and unions representing the strikers are to continue tomorrow – with the last offer still 3,5% less than the the 12% increase drivers are demanding.

In related news, two trucks were set alight this morning in Boksburg outside the Jerusalem Informal Settlement. In another incident, a truck driver is being treated in hospital after he was attacked in Kempton Park on the East Rand. A petrol bomb was thrown into the truck he was driving.

Reports are also starting to come in of petrol pumps around Gauteng and other provinces starting to run out of fuel fast.

Several petrol stations in Johannesburg and Pretoria ran out completely this morning already. Earlier this week South African Petroleum Industry Association (Sapia) said it had put contingency plans in place to ensure “minimal supply disruption” during the ongoing strike by transport trade unions, but those plans were confidential. It urged the public to remain calm.
