Everyone is always harping on about saving the environment and living sustainable lives, yet it often seems that doing so would be more expensive than the typical lifestyle. A recent inforgraphic, compiled by paydayloan, suggests the complete opposite.
paydayloan’s infographic, “Is It Green To Be Green”, shows that with just a few minor changes you could literally save thousands of rands (dollars in the case of the infographic) by adopting a greener lifestyle. The trick is that your entire lifestyle has to be green, not just certain aspects. Sure, organic food and one or two other alternatives might cost a bit more, but you’ll make that back and more by making changes in other areas. There is however, another hidden “cost” which they don’t take into account, convenience. Cloth diapers vs the disposable variety, public transportation vs a personal/private vehicle, lugging around a keg of beer vs a six-pack or two, and the list goes on.
At the end of the day though, it comes down to personal preference and how much conservation and sustainability concerns you. According to the infographic you could save up to $69 901 (R579 717), over the course of 65 years, a long time to be counting pennies.
