Well this is embarrassing, security and staff at the Cinnamon Grand hotel in central Colombo, the luxury resort where the Australian cricket team were lodging at the time, were outsmarted by a 21-year-old male escort. After bypassing officials, he made his way to players’ rooms to offer his services.
The break-in took place on Monday night, ahead of Australia’s Twenty20 clash with India on Friday. The intruder was later identified as Abdul Karim, a Sri Lankan man. He was convicted of breaking and entering and was fined 1 000 rupees (R156) and sentenced to a one-month suspended jail term.
The hotel had given cricket teams the same level of security and privacy that it affords to visiting heads of state, declaring all floors occupied by cricketers as out-of-bounds. Despite this, and apparently tight security, Karim still managed to slip through. A police officer involved with the case elaborated.
The man had gone into a player’s room offering his services as a male escort. The player refused and he barged into another room when the Australians alerted hotel security.
Security officials were understandably left red-faced. A senior official coordinating security for the tournament elaborated:
No harm was done, but the intrusion was a serious embarrassment.
Since then, we have reviewed the arrangements and taken some new measures.
Aside from the intruder, no one else involved in the incident has been named and the Australian team has not made any comments.
