On Tuesday, while millions of South Africans were celebrating Freedom Day, Ukrainian parliamentarians were expressing patriotism for their country by throwing eggs at the speaker of parliament, detonating smoke bombs in the upper chamber, and generally engaging in fisticuffs.
As you’ll see in this video, the jolly lawmakers are engaged in the ancient Ukrainian tradition of pelting the speaker of parliament with eggs as he ratifies Russia’s lease of a Ukrainian port.
Ah, isn’t the tapestry of the earth’s many cultures so vibrant and varied? Don’t mistake their behaviour for sporadic brawling. Parliamentarians were merely expressing their delight by grabbing each other roughly around the neck, and slapping the tops of each others? scalps. This is an ancient but commonly-practised ritual, dating back thousands of years to when Russia first leased a port from the Ukraine in order to house its intimidatingly large navy.
The climax of the ritual involves the detonation of smoke bombs in the building, which romantically symbolises the mist that rose from the waters of the port in Kiev on the first day that such a lease was signed, many thousands of years ago.
It just goes to show, there is so more to the Ukraine than just the hot models you find at Mavericks.
How rich and beautiful our world is.
