“Jaco Steyn, I am Louise de Waal’s mother – you killed my child and you will pay for what you did.”

These words were spoken by the mother of one of the “Sunday Rapist’s” victims shortly before he was found guilty yesterday on 33 charges – including kidnapping, rape, and murder. The matter was adjourned until today for the preparations of arguments in aggravation and mitigation of sentencing.

Steyn has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder, 11 of rape, 10 of sexual assault, 10 of kidnapping, one of attempted sexual assault, and one of attempted kidnapping. The abductions took place between 2008 and 2011 and the girls were aged between 11 and 18. Among these was 16-year-old Louise de Waal. Her mother’s confrontation with Steyn can be see in the video clip below.

After the judgment, a tearful Steyn said he would make a statement at a later stage, adding that there is “a lot you don’t know.”

He was also mocked by family members of the victims attending proceedings, with someone even shouting: “pappa wag vir jou!”
