How do you know that someone went to UCT? They tell you. Why wouldn’t they, after yet another year at the top of the rankings for Africa. They’ve even climbed a few more places this year. Keep that in your back pocket for the next time you’re having a beer and need some bragging rights.
The annual survey, administered by the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, has placed UCT as the only top 200 varsity in Africa for the second year running. UCT has moved up two places from last year, and is currently ranked as varsity number 154 in the world.
As a Matie, I was curious to find out how Cape Town’s “other university” did, to find that it is sitting in the typically non-descript 401-450 area. Yep, that’s where it’s ranked: somewhere between 401 – 450. Seriously, rankings people? You can’t even give me a number? At least at the Varsity Cup game against UCT we got 45 – 5, didn’t we?
Top honours this year went to MIT, which did the impossible by scoring 100 points out of a possible 100. Not too shabby. In comparison, UCT scored 55,7 out of 100. Quoted by TimesLive, UCT’s communications director had the following to say:
We are happy with [our] consistency . A good performance in the rankings sends the message that South Africans can get a world-class education at home.
