1time has announced in a statement that it will halt operations between Johannesburg and Mombasa – effective from September 17.

According to 1time CEO, Blacky Komani, while their current debt relief process will allow 1time to continue operating while they resolve the outstanding issues and prepare to emerge as a healthier company, part of the process will be to strengthen their profitable routes and to terminate non-profitmaking destinations.

As Mombasa is one of our newest routes still in development phase, it is with regret that we announce that we will suspend operations as of September 17 until such time that we are able to recommence this service. We do apologise for any inconvenience that this cancellation may have caused you, but we trust that you understand the business rationale behind this decision. We thank you for your support of this route and trust that your kind co-operation will continue to help 1time get back onto the road of full financial recovery.”

As is the rule with capitalism, it is the survival of the fittest. The harsh reality is that it is good news for the other airlines if 1time goes under. However it is not good news for YOU, the guy that has to pay for plane tickets. But one also cannot overlook 1time’s recent series of aircraft problems, including a “special investigation” into one particular aircraft responsible for engine failure twice in a little over two weeks.

If 1time survives this bump in the road (and I’m sure they will) this is something that seriously needs to be stepped up.
