The latest dance craze to go mainstream involves galloping around as if you were riding a horse. Which should be awkward by all accounts, but it’s caught on around the world, strangely enough.
Thanks to notorious South Korean rapper Psy (short for Psycho, real name, Park Jae-sang), the world now has Gangnam Style. Uploaded to YouTube a little over a month ago, the video has just short of 50 million views already. By any YouTube user’s standards, that’s impressive.
Notorious Psy told CNN:
There’s a saying in Korean. ‘Let’s ride a horse’ means ‘let’s have a drink and have some fun,’ hence the dance.
Notorious Psy’s Gangnam Style video, featuring many examples of the horse dance, is a total hit, and gyms in Seoul are now even incorporating the dance into their workout classes.
Here’s the original:
CNN has more:
Yahoo reported that Nelly Furtado has performed her version of the dance at a recent Philippines concert, and the CBC said that Justin Bieber may collaborate with Notorious Psy.
Gangnam is an affluent district in Seoul, and the recurring lyric “Oppan Gangnam Style” loosely translates to, “Girls, your big brother is Gangnam Style.” As Notorious Psy explained to ABC News:
Gangnam means, it’s like Beverly Hills of Korea. But the guy doesn’t look like Beverly Hills. Dance doesn’t look like Beverly Hills. … But he keeps saying I’m Beverly Hills style. So that’s the point. It’s sort of a twist.
