The beach volleyball arena
The London 2012 Paralympics is about to get underway, and we’re still on a comedown from the 2012 London Olympics. But eight years ago, Greece spent €13 billion to stage the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. This is what some of the venues look like now.
These images left us feeling a bit sick, and we were shocked. They stand as a reminder of the catastrophic overspending in the pre-recession years that last year saw Greece’s debt stand at a record 165% of total GDP.
Many of the venues built and used during the 2004 Games were for sports that Greeks don’t even play, and this, along with the shattering economic collapse, have left them totally unused, and in a state of disrepair.
However, some venues like The Olympic Stadium, Olympic Village, media center, and a few small-scale sports arenas are still being used, and others are up for sale, or for rent.
