Five female Olympic Gymnasts on an open-top double-decker bus in London teaching George Bush’s daughter how to Dougie. Kind of sounds like some bizarre fantasy, doesn’t it? Except it’s not, it’s exactly what happened earlier this week.
Jenna Bush-Hager, one of the former US President’s twin daughters, is a correspondent for the Today Show and was recently in London to interview the Fierce Five, USA’s female gymnastic contingent. While on assignment, she sought the counsel of the young athletes, but not for what you might think – she asked them to teach her how to “Dougie”. What is the Dougie? Wikipedia explains:
The Dougie is a hip-hop dance generally performed by moving one’s body in a shimmy style and passing a hand through or near the hair on one’s own head. There is no defined way to perform the Dougie, and each individual performs with his or her own variation. Rapper Corey Fowler, nicknamed Smoove, of Cali Swag District said, “Everybody does it different…The way you do it defines you.”
Without a moment’s hesitation, jaw-dropping gymnast McKayla Maroney steps up, flawlessly demonstrating the tricky dance. Bush’s attempted rendition is a far cry from her more coordinated counterpart’s efforts and even draws a hearty laugh from onlooker Gabby Douglas. I guess when you spend your childhood in the White House there isn’t much time to stay hip with what is happening on the dance scene.
