Zulu Queen Nomzamo kaMyeni has been hospitalised after allegedly overdosing on medication after King Misuzulu cancelled their wedding and reunited with his first wife.
Queen Nomzamo, the third wife of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, is recovering in a Durban hospital after suffering a stroke allegedly brought on by a suspected suicide attempt.
She was set to marry the king on January 26 in a traditional Shembe ceremony, but the king cancelled the wedding, saying that he needed to prioritise national matters, including issues concerning the Ingonyama Trust and iThala Bank.
“She took a large number of tablets, and we believe it may have been a suicide attempt. She was admitted to the hospital, and many within the royal family are deeply concerned about her,” revealed a royal insider.
The king’s office confirmed her hospitalisation, saying: “She was hit by a stroke and is getting medical attention in a Durban hospital.”
The king and Myeni’s planned wedding was also legally challenged by the king’s first wife, Queen Ntokozo Mayisela, who in her papers in Pietermaritzburg High Court argued that she and the king had a civil marriage, which forbids either of them to marry again unless the current marriage has been ended.
However, the court dismissed Mayisela’s application on the basis that there was no proof that the traditional event, which had been announced, would amount to a legal wedding.
Following the cancellation, the king reportedly sent a delegation with a cow to the Myeni family as a gesture of apology. But those close to Queen kaMyeni say she hasn’t been the same since.
Recently, King Misuzulu has been seen with his new bride-to-be, Princess Sihle Mdluli, in Mpumalanga, while at the same time, sources claim he tried to take away Queen kaMyeni’s state-funded bodyguards. Recently, she has been staying alone in uPhongolo, having left the Machobeni Royal Palace earlier this year.
