Steve Hofmeyr is gatvol with disappointment after pulling the plug on his Cape Town IKOON concert, which was supposed to be a massive 60th birthday bash – except only 8,000 people bought tickets.
The event was set for 29 March at the DHL Stadium, a venue that can hold up to 55,000 people on a good day. On the guest list were Afrikaans music royalty, such as Juanita du Plessis, Karlien and Bobby van Jaarsveld, Nadine, Kurt Darren, Bok van Blerk, and more.
But even with that star power, the turnout just wasn’t turning out.
Hofmeyr took to social media on Wednesday, venting his frustration in true Steve fashion, saying he was “thoroughly sick with disappointment”, reported News24. Writing in Afrikaans, he revealed that he’d spoken to concert promoters the day before and had tried everything to keep the show alive.
“But, as with most concerts, I am at the mercy of the promoters’ cashbook, and if it doesn’t work out, there’s little I can do about it,” he said.
His biggest concern, he expressed, is not the half-empty stadium so much as the fans who already bought tickets or made travel plans. “We even arranged a holiday around the Cape concert,” he added, before thanking the artists and supporters for their patience.
“For us, 8,000 people would be more than enough,” the ‘Oranje’ singer said, which sounds… optimistic, considering the size of DHL Stadium. Hofmeyr promised fans updates when he had them.
Concert organisers Cool Concerts also chimed in, admitting they really thought Cape Town would show up for a big Afrikaans event, given the lack of major shows in the city.
“We simply cannot host the concert for the number of fans who purchased tickets in a stadium format. We have already contacted all the role players, and we will relaunch the marketing campaign in the run-up to a new date.”
“With Afrikaans is Groot and Krone not being presented in Cape Town, this is the last attempt at a major Afrikaans concert in Cape Town,” the statement added.
No pressure.
In the meantime, Hofmeyr still has his conservative online show, Steve’s Monday Chats, where he dives into hot-button topics like SA’s Human Rights Day, missing child Joshlin Smith, Trump, Elon Musk, Israel-Palestine, and whatever else is on his mind.
You can probably bet that for the next show, he’ll have a lot to say about this.
