Another day, another high-end car crash in Cape Town – and social media detectives are already calling foul play.
This time, a flashy gold BMW and a sleek black Mercedes-Benz decided to meet head-on at the Loop and Hout Street intersection in the CBD on Friday, 21 March – right on Human Rights Day, no less.
Emergency responders arrived to find the wreckage, but thankfully, only minor injuries were reported.
CCTV footage that surfaced later showed one of the cars possibly jumping a red robot before slamming into the other. But here’s where things get spicy: two men, dressed in what looked like white and black Islamic cloaks, casually strolled out of the wrecked vehicle and disappeared into the crowd.
A later image allegedly caught them watching from a distance – almost too chill for people who just walked away from a luxury car pile-up, the South African notes.

If this feels like déjà vu, you’re not wrong. The city’s been having a bit of a luxury car crash problem.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis just announced the impounding of an R5 million Bentley Bentayga, per The South African, which is a reminder that even the rich aren’t safe from law enforcement’s wrath. Meanwhile, just weeks ago, a McLaren and a Ferrari both met tragic ends on Cape Town’s streets.
The Nigerian rapper 3Gar Baby allegedly turned his McLaren into a missile earlier this month while tearing through a residential area. Now, he’s facing charges of reckless and negligent driving.
And let’s not forget the case of David Polet, the Ferrari driver who ploughed into two pedestrians on Buitengracht Street in February. One of the victims, dental surgeon Ncumisa Mdlokolo, sadly lost her life. Polet is now facing charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence.
Cape Town’s streets are starting to look less like a luxury car showroom and more like a demolition derby. And with investigations underway, it’s only a matter of time before we find out if this latest wreck was just bad luck – or something more sinister.
