Protector, a new app now available in New York and Los Angeles, provides on-demand armed security, earning the nickname “Uber with guns.” The service lets users hire active or retired law enforcement and military personnel as personal security, complete with Cadillac Escalade motorcades.
The launch comes on the heels of the December 2024 assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan. The app’s promotional video even highlights the tragic event, suggesting that their services could have prevented it.
“With the click of a button, Protector users can schedule veteran and former law enforcement private security personnel to serve as personal protection when needed.”
Created by former Meta employee Nick Sarath, Protector requires a 5-hour advance booking and charges $100 per hour, with a $129 annual subscription fee.
Much like online first-person-shooter games, users can personalise their security detail’s wardrobe, selecting from “Business Casual,” “Tactical Casual,” or “Operator”.

“They all come from top units within their departments or agencies such as SWAT, Emergency Services Unit, Air Force PJ (pararescue) and even SEAL teams.”
Currently ranked among the top 15 travel apps on the Apple App Store, Protector is part of Protector Security Solutions’ broader portfolio, which also includes Patrol, a neighbourhood security service.
The company insists its role is more “a complement to law enforcement rather than a replacement”, but it feels more like this season’s must-have lethal accessory.
Saturday nights in Long Street can finally be safe again if they bring this to SA.
